Welcome to Serenity in the Storm Counseling!
My name is Liz Desilets de Cardenas and I am a licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I am excited for the opportunity to work with you to improve your life! I specialize in working with children (5+), teens, young adults, and adults who experience depression and anxiety - especially those who struggle with self-injury or suicidal thoughts. I am a compassionate, non-judgmental, and understanding person who gently challenges people to overcome the obstacles they face in living a healthy, balanced, and fulfilling life.
"I believe that change is possible if you have a safe environment to leave your comfort zone AND the skills needed to make those necessary changes. My goal as a therapist is to provide that safe environment, teach the skills needed to make changes, and collaborate with you (and your support system if applicable) in order to achieve your goals."
I have extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), as well as training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sand Tray Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and CBT for Psychosis / LEAP. I believe in a holistic approach, so I am happy to collaborate with other providers and connect you to community resources to address any unmet physical/emotional/spiritual needs.
Professional Background
I have worked in the mental health field for more than 22 years, 17 of which were in Community Mental Health, and then 5+ years in private practice. My positions were held in various settings - including residential, vocational, crisis stabilization, emergency services, and in-home services. I have experience working with ages 5+ doing individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy. In my community mental health work, I have collaborated with DMH, DDS, DCF, MRC, and WWL to meet the unique needs of a variety of people. Due to my extensive background, I can assist individuals and families to navigate the mental health and social services system in Massachusetts.
Education
I graduated from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (now William James College) in 2014 with an M.A. in Counseling Psychology and concentrations in Community Mental Health and Latinx Mental Health. I also have a special interest in treating anosognosia, a common symptom of schizophrenia that is often misconceived as denial. I completed Foundational DBT training with The Bridge of Central MA, Inc. and I completed DBT Intensive Training with the Treatment Implementation Collaborative (TIC) LLC. I completed an intensive EMDR training with EMDR Consultation in 2023.
